Registering and reporting for homeschooling in South Australia

We understand that the mandatory registration process and reporting requirements for the South Australian Government can feel daunting, confusing and overwhelming, not to mention time-consuming.

That’s why we’ve put together this guide, which gives you step-by-step instructions for registering and reporting.

And to streamline the process, Euka offers a Government Registration Service where we compile your child’s learning plans, and a Government Report Creator where we collate the report; to make it easier for you to submit the paperwork to the Government. These services can be purchased together or separately when you enrol your child for a full year (four consecutive terms).

Ready to enrol?

We offer a curriculum for every stage of learning – kindergarten, primary, secondary, and senior. The first step in enrolling is simply selecting your child’s grade level.

Our Step by Step Guide

Registering your child

Homeschooling families in South Australia with students aged from 6 to 17 are required to register with the South Australian government.

The Government requires:

  • A learning program addressing all eight learning areas
  • Your child’s birth certificate

Using Euka’s Government Registration Service, we’ll generate your child’s learning plans, so that you can submit the documentation to the Government. Euka can’t submit the application or contact the Government on your behalf; the Department of Education will only engage with the child’s parent or guardian.

Steps to register your child

Here are the steps to register with the SA Government if you’ve purchased the Government Registration Service.

Step 1 – Enrol with Euka

Enrol your child with Euka and purchase the Government Registration Service and Government Report Creator.

Step 2 – Complete the Euka Registration questionnaire

Complete the Euka Registration questionnaire in the Parent Portal. Once we receive your response, we’ll generate your child’s learning plans within 48 hours.

Step 3 – Download learning plans

Download your child’s learning plans from the Parent Portal. You don’t need to submit the Euka documents directly; rather, you need to copy and paste them from your student’s Euka individualised Education Plan when completing the SA registration forms. The Scope and Sequence documents are only for reference and are not required to be submitted for registration purposes in SA.

Step 4 – Request the application form

Complete the online request for an application form on the SA Government website or email Education.HomeEducation@sa.gov.au.

Step 5 – Complete application form

Complete the application form using the Euka learning plans as a reference.

Step 6 – Principal provides additional information

The principal of the enrolled school is notified and is invited to provide any relevant information to the home education unit.

Step 7 – Apply for 4-week exemption with principal

If you want to start homeschooling immediately while the application is being assessed, you can apply for a 4-week initial exemption school with the principal.

Step 8 – Home education officer arranges meeting

A home education officer will arrange a meeting to assess your application.

Step 9 – Receive exemption approval

Receive approval from the home education unit. The school will also be notified

Reviewing and reporting

The South Australian Department of Education require reports on your child’s progress. These reports will be used as part of the registration process if you’re registering for another year of homeschooling. The reporting will be useful if you’re returning to a traditional classroom to share with the school.

Before the end of your child’s exemption period, you need to renew your child’s exemption by completing and submitting a home education review form. You need to provide information that demonstrates how the home education criteria have been met during the period of exemption, and details of future plans including learning goals for the next 12 months.

The South Australian Department of Education are looking for evidence that an appropriately planned and resourced learning program has been regularly implemented as determined by the needs and abilities of your child. They’re particularly looking for evidence of learning in literacy and numeracy.

You can do this by including in the report:

  • completed workbooks or online
  • program reports
  • a child’s performance or demonstration of a skill
  • a portfolio of annotated work samples or photographic journal
  • documented learning outcomes and achievements
  • examples of project work and topics of research
  • a child’s learning journal or personal discoveries

We recommend submitting work samples from all learning areas. Using Euka’s Government Report Creator, once you’ve uploaded your child’s work samples and added your comments to the Government Report Creator dashboard located in your child’s Student Portal, we’ll collate the information into a report for you to submit to the Government.
The South Australian Government website and this Guide to Home Schooling document has more information about reporting.

Frequently asked questions

Euka can support you with compiling the documentation for both registration and reporting, however the government requires that the parent or guardian submits the registration and reporting documents themselves.

If you don’t use Euka’s Government Registration or Reporting Services, you can still prepare the required documentation yourself with help from Euka’s resources and templates.

For Registration:

  • Download the Scope and Sequence documents (Full Year Education Plan) from the Parent Portal to form the foundation of your learning plan.
  • Individualise the plan by outlining:
    • The level your child is currently working at in each subject
    • How you’ll tailor the learning to suit their style
    • Any areas they need extra support in, or where they are excelling

For Reporting:

  • Collect labelled work samples from each learning area (Work Sample Lessons are labelled in the weekly lessons section of the student portal)
  • Download and complete the Parent Assessment Checklists from your Parent Planner Document (found in your Parent Portal) to go with each work sample.
  • Use the checklists to:
    • Provide annotations on where your child needed support or excelled in when completing the work sample
    • Tick off the curriculum outcomes that were achieved
    • Combine the work samples and checklists and provide them to your state’s Department of Education.

All enrolments, apart from Grade 6 (full year) Grade 10 (full year) and Grade 11 and 12, are automatically set to renew. The Government Registration Service and the Government Report Creator will also be automatically renewed if they were included in your original enrolment.

For example, if you enrol for Grade 9 term 1, after 90 days you’ll be automatically re-enrolled for the next term (term 2) and the next term’s program will be available in your child’s student portal.

If you enrolled into Grade 9 (full year, terms 1-4), after 365 days you’ll be automatically re-enrolled for Grade 10 (full year, terms 1-4) and the Grade 10 program will be available in your child’s student portal.

Families can opt-out of auto-renewal at any point during their enrolment via the Parent Portal.

To enrol for Grades 7, 11 and 12 or if you’ve opted-out of auto-renewal, you can re-enrol through the Parent Portal. Click on Manage programs and navigate to your child that you’d like to re-enrol.

Only students residing in Australia are required to register as homeschoolers.

If you’re currently living overseas, you are not required to register or report as a homeschooler in Australia even if you are using an Australian Curriculum provider such as Euka.

You can however still use our Government Report Creator as it provides families with a comprehensive, end-of-year report that can be useful in a variety of ways, including:

  • Transition to traditional schooling
If your child returns to a traditional classroom, the report will clearly outline subjects covered and progress made.
  • Job opportunities
The report can be a helpful asset when applying for jobs, summarising educational achievements and skills gained through homeschooling.
  • Family keep-sake
The Report Creator consolidates learning into an easy-to-read document, helping you keep your educational records organised and accessible. It’s a celebration of exciting, fun and creative learning activities your child has enjoyed throughout the year.

Yes, the Government Registration Service is available to all families regardless of whether you purchase it when you enrol or later. You can purchase the Government Registration Service through the Parent Portal.

Yes, the Government Registration and Reporting Service will provide documents based on the grade level you are enrolled into and the 4 consecutive terms that are part of your enrolment.

For example, if you have enrolled into Grade 5 but selected term 2 as your starting term, you will have access to Grade 5 terms 2, 3, 4 and Grade 6 term 1. This will mean your Government Registration learning plans will reflect these terms and grade levels, and in addition to this, any report compiled through the Government Report Creator will also reflect these terms.

No. The Government Registration Service can only be purchased by enrolling with Euka for a full year (4-terms).

Yes. The Government Registration Service and Government Report Creator is tailored for each student, their learning areas, their grade and their work. So if you’re enrolling multiple children, you’ll need to purchase the Government Registration Service and Report Creator for each child.

To transition from homeschooling to a traditional classroom, you’ll need to de-register for homeschooling and enrol your child into a school. It’s best to contact the Department of Education and they’ll advise of the steps involved.
