How homeschooling works in New South Wales

Homeschooling in NSW is a legal, well-supported education pathway governed by the Education Act 1990. Here is what you need to know to get started.

Register with the NSW Department of Education

All NSW children aged 6 to 17 must be registered with the NSW Department of Education before beginning homeschooling. Registration is free and requires an educational program based on NSW syllabuses.

Choose a curriculum
You are free to choose your own curriculum. Euka provides a complete, structured program aligned to the NSW Curriculum and Australian Curriculum, designed specifically for home learners with no teaching experience required.

Complete the Authorised Person visit
A Government Authorised Person (AP) will contact you within two to three weeks to arrange an assessment home visit. This is unique to NSW. Your Euka learning plans give you everything you need for this visit.

Start learning
Once your registration certificate is received, your child can formally begin. Lessons are delivered online through Euka’s Student Portal, with a Parent Portal for tracking progress and accessing reports.

Re-register each year
Renewal forms should be submitted at least 3 months before the current registration expires. An annual AP reporting visit is also part of the renewal process. Euka’s Registration Service and Report Creator prepare everything you need.

The NSW syllabus key learning areas covered by Euka

The NSW Department of Education requires all registered home schoolers to provide an educational program based on relevant NSW syllabuses across the key learning areas.

Euka’s program is designed to cover every one of them.
● English: Literacy, reading, writing, and language across all year levels.
● Mathematics: Numeracy, algebra, geometry, and problem-solving from Kindergarten to Year 12.
● Science and Technology: Biology, chemistry, physics, and earth sciences, with hands-on activities.
● Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE): History, geography, civics, and economics.
● Creative Arts: Visual arts and performing arts, including music, drama, and design.
● Languages: Interactive language learning available from primary through secondary.
● Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE): Wellbeing, nutrition, fitness, and personal development.
● Technologies: Digital literacy, design thinking, and emerging technologies.

If selected for a reporting visit, Euka’s built-in reporting tools help you compile the work samples and evidence of learning your Authorised Person will ask to see.

Why embrace homeschooling

Build self confidence through ownership

When children have greater ownership over their learning, they develop real self-belief, and the skills to carry it with them into whatever comes next.

Study anywhere, anytime, at your own pace

Euka’s program is fully online. Your child can study from home, a library, a cafe, or anywhere your family happens to be, whenever works best for you.

Balance study with elite sport, the arts, or life

Homeschooling gives students the flexibility to train, compete, perform, or travel without sacrificing their education. Study around football training, dance rehearsals, or a family trip, not the other way around.

Safe, supportive learning environment

Away from playground pressures and negative social dynamics, homeschooling gives children the space to focus on learning, build confidence, and grow at their own pace.

NSW Department of Education registration and reporting

NSW families are required to register with the NSW Department of Education before beginning homeschooling. Children aged 6 to 17 must be registered, and an Authorised Person (AP) home visit is part of both the initial registration and the annual renewal process.

Euka’s Registration Service prepares all the documentation you need, including your child’s full learning plan and individualised education plan. You download it and submit it to the Department yourself. It is that straightforward.

Common myths about homeschooling

Addressing common myths about homeschooling. Check out our article for more.

Homeschooled kids are sheltered

With greater flexibility, homeschooled kids engage with the world around them more than kids stuck in a classroom. They learn from real-world projects, community groups, sport or excursions, and have the time to pursue their passions or take on work experience.

Homeschooled kids are lonely

Homeschooled students socialise in many different ways through sport, clubs, co-ops, meetups, and more. They’re not limited to one classroom, they build friendships across age groups, settings, and interests.

Homeschooled kids don’t do extracurricular activities

Many families specifically choose homeschooling to enable their child to pursue their passion whether that’s music, dance, coding, sport, drama, and more. With the additional flexibility that homeschooling provides, students can balance their learning around their chosen pursuit.

Homeschooled kids just play all day

Homeschooling is far more efficient than a traditional classroom. Euka students enjoy learning in ways that suit them. They complete their required study in around 2 to 3 hours each day; giving them time to dive more deeply into subjects that interest them or pursue their passions.

Homeschooling lacks structure

At Euka, we structure our programs to maximise learning and growth. Our lessons are mapped week-by-week, with progress you can see. Families get the benefit of a clear plan with the freedom to adapt it to their life.

Homeschooling is a last resort

For many Euka families, homeschooling is a conscious choice; a proactive decision to prioritise wellbeing, flexibility, and real-world learning. It’s not a backup plan; it’s a better-fit option.

Can I homeschool my child in Sydney or regional NSW?

Yes. Euka works for families anywhere in New South Wales. Whether you are in Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, the Central Coast, or a rural area, the program is fully online and accessible from wherever your family is based.

All you need is an internet connection. And for families in remote areas or with limited connectivity, all Euka programs can be downloaded and used offline, so learning never stops even when the internet does.

Who is eligible for homeschooling in NSW?

Any student from Kindergarten to Year 12 can homeschool with Euka. All NSW students aged 6 to 17 must be registered with the NSW Department of Education.

Students aged 17 or older do not need to register. They can simply inform their current school and begin.

Do I need to stop working to homeschool my child?

No. Many Euka parents work full-time. Our program is designed for self-directed learning, with built-in marking and easy-to-follow guides that fit into your schedule, not take it over.

Do I need teaching skills or experience?

No teaching experience is needed. Euka’s program is written by qualified teachers and delivered directly to your child, step by step, lesson by lesson. Parents guide and support; the program does the teaching.

How does Euka prepare students for life beyond school?

Euka focuses on developing critical thinking, problem-solving, digital literacy, and independence: skills that serve students well beyond school, whether they pursue further study, a career, or their own path.

What subjects do I have to teach for homeschooling in NSW?

To meet NSW Department of Education requirements, your home education program must be based on the NSW Curriculum and cover the mandatory Key Learning Areas (KLAs) set by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA).

For Primary (Kindergarten to Year 6), you must cover 6 KLAs: English, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE), Creative Arts, and Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE).

For Secondary (Years 7 to 12), the full 8 KLAs apply, adding Languages and Technologies. Euka’s NSW program is fully mapped to these NESA syllabus stages, providing the structured lesson plans and work samples your Authorised Person will review.

How long does the NSW homeschooling registration process take?

In New South Wales, an Authorised Person from the NSW Department of Education will contact you within two to three weeks of submitting your application to arrange the assessment home visit.

Once the Authorised Person approves your program, the NSW Department of Education issues your certificate of home schooling registration. The timeline depends on AP availability and how completely you submit your documentation.

Euka’s Registration Service prepares your Full Year Learning Plan and Individualised Education Plan within 48 hours of your questionnaire, so your application is never the bottleneck.

What happens during the NSW homeschooling Authorised Person assessment?

The Authorised Person (AP) assessment is a standard part of NSW home schooling registration. An Authorised Person from the NSW Department of Education will meet with you to discuss and review your educational program.

They will look at your learning plan based on NESA syllabuses, your chosen learning methods, how you plan to record your child’s progress and achievement, and that you have suitable resources to support your child’s learning. They do not assess your child directly.

Your Euka Registration Service documentation, including your Full Year Learning Plan and Individualised Education Plan, is designed specifically to meet these requirements. You do not need a dedicated classroom to pass the assessment.

Does my child have to stay enrolled in school while my NSW homeschooling application is being processed?

Yes. Under the Education Act 1990, children must be enrolled or registered for education at all times. Your child needs to remain enrolled at their current school until the NSW Department of Education issues your certificate of home schooling registration.

If your child is experiencing serious wellbeing concerns at school, speak to the school principal about options available while your application is being processed. The NSW Department of Education home schooling team can also be contacted at homeschooling@det.nsw.edu.au or on +61 2 8340 8510.

Euka’s Registration Service gets your documentation ready as quickly as possible. Your learning plans are prepared within 48 hours of your questionnaire, so your application is never the bottleneck.

Can homeschooled students in NSW get into university without an HSC or ATAR?

Yes. Registered homeschoolers in NSW do not receive a traditional Record of School Achievement (RoSA) or Higher School Certificate (HSC) through NESA, but there are direct alternative pathways to university.

Euka’s University Pathway program is our assessed senior option for Years 11 and 12. Students receive marked feedback on assignments from qualified teachers and an official Academic Transcript accepted for direct entry by our partner universities, allowing students to bypass the ATAR system entirely.

Southern Cross University College has a strong presence in NSW and is among our partners offering alternative entry for homeschooled students who complete the University Pathway program.
