Homeschooling your child comes with several benefits. You have more control over the pace at which they learn and the approach to how they’re taught. There’s more room for academic flexibility, and you can create a more efficient learning environment.
You know just how important it is for you to homeschool your child, but with it comes a few challenges. When learning at home, your child isn’t automatically surrounded by other students their age. It’s also up to you to ensure you create a fun learning experience each and every day for your child.
What are the best homeschool activities to incorporate into your daily lessons to help keep your child interested and engaged? There are many different indoor and outdoor homeschool activities to consider trying. Continue reading below to get started!
1. Schedule a Music Lesson
Scheduling a music lesson can help your child learn some new skills or improve on skills they already have. You can schedule to have a music teacher come to your home for the lesson or have your child visit the studio for the lesson. The best option will depend on your schedule and what works best for you.
Lessons normally last between 30-60 minutes and will offer more than music skills. Your child will learn how to set and reach their own goals and improve their mental health as well.
Scheduling music lessons or other types of classes, such as gymnastics, swimming, and more give your child the opportunity to socialize with other children their age who are also taking the same lessons.
2. Conduct a Cooking Class
Home economics is an important topic for any student. This class teaches them the basics of household management. Take this time to teach your child a thing or two in the kitchen!
Here, they’ll learn some basic culinary skills, which they’ll keep with them for the rest of their lives. Be sure to teach them skills according to their age. Learning how to cook might also include peeling vegetables, cutting different foods using a knife, and measuring ingredients.
Don’t hesitate to use the cooking class as a way to improve their math skills also!
3. Read Together at the Library
As a parent and homeschool teacher, you know just how important reading is for your child’s growth. Reading a book at home every day for 30 minutes can get a bit boring at times. If you want to mix things up a bit, then consider visiting the local library and reading a book together there.
Some libraries will even offer different reading groups or activities for homeschooled children. Make sure to review the libraries daily schedule and sign up for the different activities they offer there.
4. Discuss Art at a Local Museum
Every child learns best in their own way.
Is your child a visual learner? If so, then it could be a great idea to take them to a local museum! For art class, you can visit an art museum and discuss the different art pieces while there.
Discover what other museums are in your area as well and see what they have to offer for a student your child’s age. Visiting different museums can be a great way to help a visual learner understand different topics or subjects.
5. Go on a Nature Walk For Exercise
Nature walks are beneficial for two reasons. First, they offer exercise for you and your child. You can use a nature walk as their physical education class.
During the walk, consider doing different physical activities along the way, such as jogging, stopping to do jumping jacks, and more. Second, nature walks present a wonderful opportunity for you to teach your child about science and nature. Many nature parks and trails offer education programs for young children.
Don’t forget to look into what programs are offered at the different local nature parks and be sure to write them into your schedule.
6. Access Online Educational Games and Shows
Although travelling outside of your home on a regular basis is a great way to make homeschool learning fun, there will be times when you’re unable to leave the house. When this happens, it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan. Know your resources.
There are many online educational games and shows for your children to enjoy. You can find a variety of different math, reading, writing, science, and history games, shows, and challenges. This allows your child some electronic time and can also be a lot of fun.
They might not even notice they’re actually learning.
7. Enjoy Recess at a Local Park
Every homeschool parent and child will need a break throughout the day. Why not let them enjoy recess at a local park? Most traditional schools have a playground for children to play on together during their recess break.
Local parks will offer the same type of equipment and will even have other children there for your child to play with. You can take this time to sit back and relax for a few minutes.
8. Let Them Get Messy With Arts and Crafts
Don’t be afraid to let your child get a bit messy with arts and crafts. Offer them paper, canvases, paints, markers, and pastels. You can have them practice their art skills outside if it’ll help reduce the stress of a big mess.
Set up an area either inside or outside by laying down a large sheet. Then, let your child get messy while teaching them different painting and drawing skills.
