Euka stories – Q&A with The Rogers

Welcome to Euka Stories. In this instalment we interview Christy Rogers, as she travels around Australia with her husband Russ, and their two sons Logan and Lawson.

Christy gives us a glimpse into the inspiring life of a homeschooling family, shedding light on their challenges and triumphs.

Please continue to read below.

Can you share your initial reasons for choosing homeschooling with Euka for your child’s education?

“We chose Euka as our homeschooling resource because of its user-friendly, parent-friendly, and enjoyable curriculum that balances online and offline work. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we made the decision to homeschool our boys after their school provided work packs for potential lockdown situations. We felt it was safer for them to learn at home. After a short period, we noticed that our boys were not only happier but also excelling in their schoolwork. As a result, we continued to homeschool them, and I was fortunate enough to work from home, which allowed me to fit their education around my work schedule. You can discover the successes, challenges, and general insights into our lives.”

What were your expectations before starting, and how have they evolved over the past year?

“At the start, our expectations weren’t too high and we weren’t sure how it was all going to work with homeschooling. We just knew Euka was offering a very good and easy-to-use curriculum. Homeschooling seemed very out of the ordinary to how we got brought up and we didn’t know any other parents who homeschooled.

But goodness, it’s worked and continues to work. So much so that we decided we could continue to homeschool and hit the road to travel around Australia full-time.”

Could you highlight some specific positive changes or developments you’ve observed in your child’s learning journey during this time?

“Both Logan and Lawson have had major changes since homeschooling with Euka. Their self-motivation is amazing. They have so much fun learning.

Logan was always quite anxious about maths, but he is now excelling in his Maths, he strives for 80% correct or higher, and it’s great to see his drive. He looks forward to maths and generally chooses to complete his maths first.

Lawson wasn’t great with English Literature and handwriting, it used to be a battle to get him to read and write. Now he is thriving with English, he’s always reading in his own time and his handwriting is excellent. He even writes his own little storybooks. He gets so excited for his term books too, as the lessons that Euka sends are always fun and keep him interested in the books.”

How has the personalised approach to education at Euka benefited your child academically and emotionally?

“Both Logan & Lawson are thriving in their lives and learning lives. They are much more confident and happy.

Logan is now self-driven and confident in his learning, so much so that he doesn’t dread any lessons anymore. Maths had always been such a trigger for him, but with the Euka lessons and the videos that come with the lessons have helped him to learn very easily and effectively.

His spelling has always been below average and with Euka English lessons his spelling has gained so much.

Lawson was always in front with his maths at school and found the school work to be too easy, unfortunately after many discussions with the school, they wouldn’t work with this gift to give him harder math work, so he found himself very bored and fed up with school. Which then increased his separation anxiety with me. So it was becoming a challenge to get him to school too.

Since Homeschooling with Euka they work with his strengths and can give him more challenging math work. At any stage I can request with Euka for more challenging Maths, they are always there to help.

They both think learning/schooling is no longer a chore and really enjoy it.”

What resources or features of the Euka program have you found most valuable for your child’s education?

“We found the videos that come with the lessons to be extremely helpful for both the kids and parents. As parents who are not from teaching backgrounds,  It’s hard to remember how to do all the maths equations, so to have the videos is extremely helpful.

Having the apps to go with their learning makes it easy and fun for them. Literacy Planet has been awesome for Lawson’s literacy, it’s a fantastic way to play and learn his spelling and sentence structure.

Overall Euka is so parent & kid friendly. “

Have there been any unique challenges you’ve faced during this homeschooling journey, and how did you overcome them?

“I feel like one of the big ones was how are we going to do this? We don’t come from teaching backgrounds. We didn’t know anyone else who was homeschooling, so it was all quite daunting. We have two boys of very different ages, one in High School and one in primary school. “

Can you share a memorable moment or achievement that stands out from your child’s experience with Euka?

“Oh it’s hard to pick just one, there are so many moments and so much that they have achieved and are still achieving. Logan would have to be his maths, he was so upset and nervous doing math and now is excelling and so confident with math.

Lawson would be his English, his reading, handwriting, and spelling have excelled so much. He is so confident in even reading out loud now.

Also Art, both boys hated Art and were always worried they were doing it wrong. They love art now. We do the boys’ art as a family. So we will do the full Art lesson all together. This gives us a great family fun time. “

How has the flexibility of homeschooling with Euka impacted your family’s daily life and routine?

“Euka has changed our lives, Homeschooling was so daunting, and then after seeing how well it was working and seeing the boys thrive emotionally and academically. we were so happy and confident that we’ve got this.

So much so, that we decided to travel Australia full time in our caravan. We easily fit in the boys’ lessons around travelling exploring and experiencing life altogether. “

In what ways has being a part of the Euka community enriched your child’s socialisation and extracurricular experiences?

“Being on the road full-time, we haven’t used the Euka Community. We do our own socialisations within our travel lifestyle. But during our travel lives we have met so many other families on the road and have recommended Euka in which they have joined and almost created our own little travel Euka community.”

Finally, what advice or insights would you offer to other parents who are considering homeschooling with Euka or are in the early stages of their journey?

“We were there with you too, it may seem daunting and overwhelming but it soon becomes very easy. We are not from teaching backgrounds but you don’t need a teaching background with Euka, they have and do all the hard work for you.

Breathe… let this journey be fun, relax… it doesn’t need to be perfect.

It will change your lives for the better, the Kids will thrive and it will free up your lives for more quality time. Just watch the kids smile and see how proud they are of their work and achievements.

Reach out to other Euka parents if you want or need to, a lot of them have really awesome tips and tricks. Euka is also there to support you on your Homeschooling Journey.

We first did it home-based and now do it in a caravan on the road full time. You’ve got this,  Beautiful Parents.”
