Maverick’s Story: From Classroom to Boardroom
As seen on Channel 9’s Today Show!
As the school holidays approach, many students are looking forward to a well-earned break. But for a growing number of families, the end of term signifies something much more permanent – a complete shift away from traditional schooling.
In Victoria, homeschool registrations have surged by nearly 10% in the past year and Queensland has surged by 12%, reflecting a broader national trend that has seen homeschooling numbers more than double since 2019.
What’s driving this shift and what does homeschooling actually look like for students and parents?
Let’s take a closer look at the motivations behind this growing movement, featuring recent Euka graduate, 18-year-old Maverick Valley, a student who embodies the spirit of educational independence.
Maverick Valley is living proof that education doesn’t have to follow a traditional path. Two years ago, he made the bold decision to leave his private school in Melbourne’s southeast, opting instead for a more flexible, self-directed learning approach. From living on a boat in Melbourne’s Docklands to travelling overseas, Maverick’s educational experience has been anything but conventional.
By choosing homeschooling, Maverick and his family avoided the significant fees of private education while still accessing a structured curriculum, completed aligned with Australian standards.
But his education didn’t stop at books and assignments. During this time, he also gained invaluable work experience, earning a part-time salary of $30,000 a year while working in his father’s tech business. His role expanded to overseeing inside sales and business administration – skills often reserved for those years into their careers.
His father’s philosophy on learning is simple but effective:
“I’m a big believer in throwing kids in the deep end.”
This approach appears to have paid off. Not only has Maverick completed his Year 12 studies, but he has also acquired a 20% stake in the family business – giving him not just hands-on experience, but actual ownership and responsibility.

What’s Driving the Rise in Homeschooling?
The rise in homeschooling isn’t limited to cases like Maverick’s. Data shows that homeschooling across Australia has more than doubled since 2019, with Victoria alone seeing a 7% increase in registrations over the past year.
But what’s causing parents to make the switch?
Here are the top three reasons:
1️⃣ Social Issues (like Bullying)
Almost a quarter of parents cite bullying and other social issues as their primary motivation for homeschooling. For many families, the emotional wellbeing of their children takes precedence over any perceived benefits of classroom learning.
2️⃣ Academic Concerns
Some parents believe the traditional education system doesn’t meet their child’s academic needs, particularly if their child learns at a different pace or prefers alternative approaches to learning. Homeschooling offers a personalised approach where students can progress at their own speed.
3️⃣ Philosophical Differences
More parents are embracing non-traditional educational philosophies. From self-paced learning to project-based education, many parents see homeschooling as a way to cater to their child’s unique learning style.
Euka CEO Brett Campbell explains it best:
“Children have different learning speeds, different learning requirements, and different learning tastes. The ability for them to learn at their own pace within their own levels of flexibility is really rewarding.”
This emphasis on personalisation is one of the core strengths of homeschooling, allowing students to develop independence, critical thinking, and real-world skills – as Maverick’s story clearly illustrates.

What Does the Future of Education Look Like?
The rise of homeschooling reflects a broader shift in how we view education. For families like Maverick’s, learning isn’t confined to a classroom – it happens at home, on boats, overseas, and in family businesses. It’s a move towards flexibility, real-world skills, and personal growth.
Whether you’re inspired by Maverick’s journey or simply curious about the homeschooling trend, one thing is certain: education is evolving, and it’s happening faster than ever.
